Rodie Chic Review

The Roadie Chic furniture collection is the ultimate blend of old and new - A blend of Oriental history and modern contemporary living.

The reclaimed lumber we use is processed wood retrieved from its original application for purposes of cabinet making for our Roadie Chic furniture collection. Most of our reclaimed timber comes from old boats and houses from the south of India. Our reclaimed or antique lumber has unique properties that is used primarily for construction and added decoration of the furniture.

Reclaimed timber is very popular for many reasons including the wood's unique appearance, its contribution to green the greener environment, the history of the wood's origins plus the physical characteristics such as stability, strength and durability. The increased strength of reclaimed timber is often attributed to the reduced pollution that existed up until the 20th century. Also in those days, the timber was usually harvested from virgin sources and not plantations which had hundreds of years to grow.

Reclaimed beams can be sawn into wider planks than newly harvested timber and often the wood is more stable than newly cut wood because reclaimed wood has been exposed to changes in humidity and temperature for much longer. In some cases, the timbers from which planks are cut have been naturally expanding and contracting for over a century. The impact of changing heat and moisture is much less dramatic with antique wood than newly sawn wood because old wood has already been through this cycle for many years.

The reclaimed timber industry started to gain proper momentum in the early 1980's when large-scale reuse of wood and other building materials such as roofing slates and red bricks began. The industry grew due to a growing awareness and concern for environmental issues as well as declining quality in new timbers and other building materials.
